1.3

1. Who made the decision to alter the sweater?
the night news editor and assistant new editor.

2. How did they alter it?
the made the dancers sweater longer to cover her underwear.

3. Why does altering it break the rules in policies you read in 1.2?
because it goes past the boundaries of editing set to prevent the content from being manipulated.

4. What is the difference between a real-life photo and an illustration?
an illustration is edited and the content was changed. a real life photo was not edited in any way.

5. Is altering the photo ok in this case and why? (write 2-3 sentence justification for your answer.)
I think that altering the photo and presenting it as an original photo is wrong in any case.they could have found another way to censor the photo. they could said something like "this photo was altered for viewers benefit. " and that way they said it was altered.

6. How did they get caught?
A local television station took all of their editions and saw the difference.

7. How did the paper change its policy as a result of this incident?
the new policy was that there was to be no digital manipulation of news photos under any circumstances.
1. What, in general, do both organizations say about altering the content or truth of a photograph?
in general they both say that altering a photo is wrong. the amount to which it becomes wrong is where they begin to differ.

2. What specific techniques do both organizations say are at times permissible?
they basicly say "The film or digital image captured by the camera can be computer-enhanced only for the purpose of producing the closest possible likeness of what the photographer actually saw." Such as "burning, dodging, toning and cropping are acceptable."

3. For what reasons do both organizations give as valid reasons for slightly altering photos?
Associated Press says "Retouching is limited to removal of normal scratches and dust spots."
while Austin American Statesman says- "We do not digitally alter photographs by adding or removing content.Traditional darkroom techniques such as lightening or darkening...for legibility or emphasis are allowed"
1. Which of the two pictures do you think is fake, and what specific elements in the photo indicate this? (Look closely)

I think the photo where the plane is behind the man is fake. it doesn't make any sense. if an air plane was behind him he would have known for sure. And most likely wouldn't have stayed to take the photo.

2. Why do you think someone would fake a photo like this?

someone might want to fake a photo like this because they want to be able to say that they were in some very infamous moment.Although its really hard to comprehend why someone would want false glory and respect, its not hard to see that they are not the only ones.

3. Is it wrong to fake a photo like this?

yes it is wrong to fake a photo like this. 9-11 was and still is a very emotional event in history.and to fake a photo of someone in that situation is not okay. to make people feel sorry for that person or their family is wrong.

4. Under what circumstances would it be wrong for a news organization to run a fake photo?
if they said that it was fake. its never okay to run a fake photo and present it as truth.

ethical or unethical?

altered.- where do your eyes look? what do you see...
unaltered...what did you look at first?.. i bet it wasn't the man on the floor.

i chose this photo to represent the most unethical manipulation of photos. It is unethical to manipulate this photo because what they did made tried to alter what people knew to be true. If people depend on photos to know whats going on altering whats important in the news now is like altering a history book.

Madison College Diveristy Photo

In the Madison photo they digitally added a black student into their originally all white photo.
they said that they did this to show the diversity that already existed in the school. they said the decision came because there really wasn't any photos that showed the diversity.

I think the photo that they published was wrong because it altered the truth. if they couldn't get any pictures that showed the diversity then that says something. I think that they should have run the first photo because that would have been an actual representation of the school.

funny photos

Gayle thomson is being forced to go to a young mens correctional facility in Africa. He was sent to the facility F.A.T. (Fathers against Technology) to wean him away from his life long love. After many hours of arguing he reluctantly decided to go. He says he will be keeping in touch through letters.

Mr. Ronald MacDonald smiles at one too many people in the small town of Winchestertinsonville Ohio.He came here with the attempt to motivate the people of Winchestertinsonville to come to MacDonald's. Obviously his mission failed..(looks like were going to burger king.)

The graduating class of 2005 gets a very "wet" gift from their fellow peers. some of the non graduating seniors wanted to send the others to a water park as a going away present. but due to budget cuts this was all the could afford.

repetition

The Blues
Performers rehearse for the opening ceremony of the 6th National City Games in Wuhan, capital of central China's Hubei province. The sporting meet will begin on Oct. 25 in Wuhan.

this photo shows repetition because the sheets are the same size and there is the same amount of people holding each side of the sheet. the gaps around the material draw your eyes to the middle.

Bike-a-paloozza
Cyclists hold up their bicycles during a 'Critical Mass' demonstration on the European Car Free Day in Budapest, Hungary.
this photo shows repetition because its a picture with a bunch of the same size and shape bike tires. on ht bottom middle there is a gap and that gap draws your eye to the middle.

Doe-Eyed
Lisa Simpson appears on television screens on a new Singapore Airlines Airbus A380 after its inaugural passenger flight from Singapore to Sydney, Australia.

this photo shows repetition in the way that its just a bunch of the same shapes. all the t.v.s in the middle have the same thing on, and the color draws your eyes to the middle.

Sugar Hill

A. What skills in addition to photography did Melanie Burford utilize to produce this slideshow?
she recorded people talking, and singing with a tape recorder for the slide show so that the pictures would more clearly tell a story.

B. What was the effect (added power or meaning) of the multimedia effects of the slideshow.
the singing in the background really gave the pictures meaning. what she was saying was so sad and..real. that when you were looking at the pictures you weren't just sitting at your computer looking at someone else's life you were really in that room, or in that house with them.it really made you feel for them.and the way that she had the pastor talking in between her singing it really brought the pictures to life.

academic shoot

1. What challenges did you encounter while trying to get close, capture real moments, and capture action or emotion? How did you deal with these?
one of the challenges that i encountered was how people wanted to fake that they were doing something.which made it hard to capture a real moment. i didn't really have a problem getting close to the theater kids because most of them liked it..but it was hard to capture a normal expression from them because they wanted to over act just so it would look good..even though i kept telling them that i cant show anyone this now so it doesn't matter..but when they started faking it i just went to someone else.

2. What technical aspects of photography (focus, exposure, composition) did you find yourself thinking about the most, and how did you make sure you did these correctly?
i thought mostly about focus because at times they were on stage and i couldn't get on stage with them so i had to be sure that i had my camera in focus. in order to do this i just put my camera on automatic.

3. Describe how you attempted to use at least one of the advanced composition techniques when you shot.
when people were on stage i tried to angle myself in order to use the rule of thirds.
i also tried to make sure things were balanced.

Bob Rosato

Focal length of lens -16-35 mm
Shutter Speed -1/250
What is the effect of shooting at this shutter speed?
so he shot at a medium shutter speed which was high high enough to make the picture clear, but its not perfect.
Aperture-2.8
What is the effect (Depth of field) of shooting at this aperture?
you can see i a little bit of whats going on in the back but, there isn't that much to see..

Position - Describe where you think the photographer was standing to get this shot.
i think the photographer was kneeling on the side line near the hoop.

simplictiy

i choose this photo as an example of simplicity because even to someone who had never heard of 9-11 this photo would be frightening. you see in the photo the rubble in the background, and the fact that they have a pice of something over their head to protect them while they are running away would scare anyone.
even though its a simple photo it shows great emotion.

the rule of thirds

this photo shows how a good photographer would use

Not Merging.

this is a good example of not merging. the photographer could have easily cut off the man in front. they coul dhave cut his arm off from the shot. but they didnt. by doing so they created a sense of alarm, or fear.

three photos

fills the frame.
this picture is completly filled with this eyenad the lady that he is looking at.

the Action
In this picture the action is both him getting allot of air, and his friends excitement add to the action.

tells a story

the picture tells a story by the way they look at each other. I think that the story behind this picture is that these two people like each other.and are waiting for someone to make the first move..

the empty chair

this photo is from the atpi contest.this photo is powerful because i think the fact that the frame is filled with one thing (most of it just being darkness) leaves the photo up to your own personal interpretaion of it. i love the way the photgrapher made the light shine mostly on the seat of the chair and then completly black around it.

pinhole artist's

1. well unless you consider the sunlight coming in through the window this picture has no people or action. so there is no blur.
the rocks are more in focus. but nothing seems to be too soft.
3. No i don't consider the image warped at all.. it looks perfect.

1. In this photo there are people they don't appear to be in any action.

there is allot of blur. Its almost hard to see their faces.

2. the railing seems to be in good focus, while the people next to in aren't in as good of focus.

3. the image looks slightly warped.his belly looks a little warped, and their faces are defiantly distorted.

Crituque

this image is very good! THe shot is up close, ao you can see her face very well. the frame is completly filled with her, and it a canded shot. its right in the middle of a gesture! ------------------>
the above image isn't so good. You cant really see her face. And the frame is filled with other things. Getting a closer shot would have made this better.
