1.3

1. Who made the decision to alter the sweater?
the night news editor and assistant new editor.

2. How did they alter it?
the made the dancers sweater longer to cover her underwear.

3. Why does altering it break the rules in policies you read in 1.2?
because it goes past the boundaries of editing set to prevent the content from being manipulated.

4. What is the difference between a real-life photo and an illustration?
an illustration is edited and the content was changed. a real life photo was not edited in any way.

5. Is altering the photo ok in this case and why? (write 2-3 sentence justification for your answer.)
I think that altering the photo and presenting it as an original photo is wrong in any case.they could have found another way to censor the photo. they could said something like "this photo was altered for viewers benefit. " and that way they said it was altered.

6. How did they get caught?
A local television station took all of their editions and saw the difference.

7. How did the paper change its policy as a result of this incident?
the new policy was that there was to be no digital manipulation of news photos under any circumstances.
1. What, in general, do both organizations say about altering the content or truth of a photograph?
in general they both say that altering a photo is wrong. the amount to which it becomes wrong is where they begin to differ.

2. What specific techniques do both organizations say are at times permissible?
they basicly say "The film or digital image captured by the camera can be computer-enhanced only for the purpose of producing the closest possible likeness of what the photographer actually saw." Such as "burning, dodging, toning and cropping are acceptable."

3. For what reasons do both organizations give as valid reasons for slightly altering photos?
Associated Press says "Retouching is limited to removal of normal scratches and dust spots."
while Austin American Statesman says- "We do not digitally alter photographs by adding or removing content.Traditional darkroom techniques such as lightening or darkening...for legibility or emphasis are allowed"
1. Which of the two pictures do you think is fake, and what specific elements in the photo indicate this? (Look closely)

I think the photo where the plane is behind the man is fake. it doesn't make any sense. if an air plane was behind him he would have known for sure. And most likely wouldn't have stayed to take the photo.

2. Why do you think someone would fake a photo like this?

someone might want to fake a photo like this because they want to be able to say that they were in some very infamous moment.Although its really hard to comprehend why someone would want false glory and respect, its not hard to see that they are not the only ones.

3. Is it wrong to fake a photo like this?

yes it is wrong to fake a photo like this. 9-11 was and still is a very emotional event in history.and to fake a photo of someone in that situation is not okay. to make people feel sorry for that person or their family is wrong.

4. Under what circumstances would it be wrong for a news organization to run a fake photo?
if they said that it was fake. its never okay to run a fake photo and present it as truth.

ethical or unethical?

altered.- where do your eyes look? what do you see...
unaltered...what did you look at first?.. i bet it wasn't the man on the floor.

i chose this photo to represent the most unethical manipulation of photos. It is unethical to manipulate this photo because what they did made tried to alter what people knew to be true. If people depend on photos to know whats going on altering whats important in the news now is like altering a history book.

Madison College Diveristy Photo

In the Madison photo they digitally added a black student into their originally all white photo.
they said that they did this to show the diversity that already existed in the school. they said the decision came because there really wasn't any photos that showed the diversity.

I think the photo that they published was wrong because it altered the truth. if they couldn't get any pictures that showed the diversity then that says something. I think that they should have run the first photo because that would have been an actual representation of the school.
